It's not that I disbelieve the creator of what appears to be a truly awesome mod, but I'd still like to hear from some neutral parties that have played the game with the Empire Building mod enabled about whether the mod is well balanced and whether the mod makes the AI even more of a pushover.įinally, I recently read about Jolly Joker's suite of mods on the "Battlefield" website's newsletter, the "Stronghelm Globe" (volume two). The mod's creator claims this doesn't matter much in terms of making the game less difficult due to AI resource bonuses and increased upkeep costs for your units. That said, the mod's creator admits that the AI is wholly incapable of choosing sensible specializations with the mod enabled. The focus on using mythical city upgrades to unlock specialized units also appears to be very well done and is appealing to me. Therefore, the "Empire Building" mod caught my eye, as the mod seems to force a lot of choice on the player about how to specialize cities and units. I'm also a huge fan of game design decisions that force mutually exclusive choices on the player (i.e. Mostly, I find the lack of AI challenge is down to terrible pathfinding, poor decision making when it comes to specializing cities / units / armies, and the tendency to split stacks. Not trying to brag or anything, but I do. Still, I find the AI to be a bit of a pushover. I also play with the PBEM and Single Player Balance mod enabled. I also try to artificially restrict my settling or sometimes I play with city settling turned off entirely (but dwelling and independent city spawning tuned to max). I normally play on the second highest difficulty with normal defenders, land heavy maps, and no underground to try and make the playing field a little more even for the AI. I'm looking to increase the AI's ability to pose a challenge while maintaining a decent balance in the game.
